Why Is Lunch Taking So Long? Captain For A Day - Sailing From Iles des Saintes To Guadeloupe

Frittata prepared underway with Hollandaise sauce and the last of our French buagette. But why was lunch taking so long, anyway?

Sailing to Guadeloupe was calm, some might say monotonous…

…other than taking some photos and getting some great sketches. For some reason, it was taking Danny an unusually long time to prepare lunch. We looked into the galley, and this is what we found.

Danny was perfecting his Fuzzbow dance choreography skills. Fuzzbow or Fuzzball, his name often alternated, is Laura's childhood Snow Leopard stuffed animal who travels with her everywhere. He's a big hit around here.

The Best Way To Learn How To Sail: Captain For A Day

I’m the captain now!

Today I was the captain, responsible for keeping watch, raising the sails, and being a primary decision maker.

I love that Danny set this up. It was a way for us to rotate the burden of responsibility and take some of the underlying pressure off of one particular person (Danny, our Captain), but it was so cool because it gave Laura and I the chance to learn and grow in our sailing abilities.

Years working on a sailing yacht, and yet until you grab the reigns and are fully rsponsible for sailing the vessel, it’s amazing how much you don’t know!

Working On A Boat For A Living Doesn't Mean You Know How To Sail It!

It's funny how after working as a first mate and a chef on charter yachts for four years, you'd think a chef would be as competent and knowledgeable about navigating, but it's not always the case. Talking amidst some friends who've also been charter chefs, and unless you make an effort to ask questions and engage with your Captain and express and overt interest, you can be in the galley or knocking out other things and never fully understand the navigating side of the gig! So stepping into the Captain's duties each day helped solidify my understanding of some parts of sailing a catamaran I'd missed for the four years prior.

Arriving To Pigeon Harbor, Guadeloupe (And Hiding Under Tables)

We came into a harbor and did not go ashore. We had to go to three different mooring sites because dive companies came up to us claiming the various balls. At one point Laura and I were hiding in the galley to avoid the third dive company to yell at us… Danny, our man of valor, shook us out of that by the look he gave us while we were hiding behind the table. I mean, sometimes when you've been sailing all day all you want to do is crawl under a table and avoid life's responsibilities! #babies

By the time we found a mooring ball we were allowed to be on, we needed to settle. We watched the sun go down and caught these lovely images of Pigeon Island.
