Concluding a 12 hour day of sailing beyond volcanos, landmarks in marketing history, and feeling a new level of confidence in captaining a boat, we made our way to Pinney’s Beach off Nevis, and solved the ongoing Salon Sauna Mystery.

Pinney’s Beach, Nevis. Nevis is known for resembling a great big sombrero.

We found a mooring off Pinney’s Beach on Nevis. It was my night to cook, and I made a butternut squash soup with macaroni noodles, andouille sausage, garlic onion, and carrots. Most importantly, we finally solved the ongoing Salon Sauna mystery.

The Sailboat Salon Sauna Saga

There was this strange phenomenon happening on the boat. We’d wake up, walk into the salon (the inside main living room area of the boat) and it would feel like a sauna. I’m talking 85 degrees +. I was always the first to wake up, I’d come upstairs, and it was like walking into a jungle.

We had theories around it being the sound system fan cranking out extra heat and being unable to cool down, some sort of electronics running super hot, but we couldn’t crack the code.

This boat, though under a year old, has several quirks. Among them- the previous owners only had air conditioning set up in their master cabin (clearly they had zero friends), so every night we built a makeshift pillow fort, closing off my cabin to Laura and Danny’s (the goal is to funnel the remnants of the A/C into my cabin.) It worked. Kinda. I also was on a trip of a lifetime, so ya know, beggars can’t be choosers. It was a case of the suck it up, Buttercups.

Definitely trip of a lifetime status. Definitely suck it up buttercups for sights like this.

The mystery of the Salon Sauna was solved that night.

Every night, our wind-down ritual would consist of some form of snuggling up around the L couch in the salon to watch a movie, play Farkle, or talk. Snuggling to watch Airplane that night, Danny noticed there was a switch right by where we’d set up our backrest of pillows, labeled “HEATER.”

... Our pillows would hit that switch. Yep. We were running the heater every night. Brilliant. Salon Sauna mystery… solved.
