Day 10: Hiking Mount Scenery And Exploring Saba Island - Our Favorite Caribbean Island!
Hiking Mount Scenery On Saba Island
After clearing customs, settling my belly from our 45 minute mooring field Goldilocks crashcourse, Garvis, our new friend gave us a small tour of The Bottoms and Windwardside. He told us of how his grandfather was one of the men who helped build the Road That Couldn’t Be Built. I loved people-watching on this island. Many of the locals have Dutch genetics - tall, thin, light blonde fine hair. We took in the sites as we drove through the beautiful town of The Bottoms, and made our way up to the trailhead of Mount Scenery (3084 feet high.)
Here’s Lonely Planet’s perfect summary of how cool Mount Scenery is:
A dormant volcano that last erupted in 1640, Mt Scenery (887m) is the pinnacle of pyramid-shaped Saba, and officially the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It's covered by elfin forest (cloud forest) with 200-year-old mountain mahogany trees smothered in orchids, bromeliads and other epiphytes. The Mt Scenery Stairway starts behind the Trail Shop in Windwardside and climbs 1064 stairs. Check the weather forecast before setting out as the steps can become extremely slippery in rain.
So we embarked on our vertical adventure. Hundreds of gasps, elephant-ear-fronds-in-our-mouths-later *Laura* we made it to the summit. A 360˚ Panoramic view of gorgeous Caribbean ocean; Eustatius, St. Maarten and St. Barths in the distance.
The plant life on top of Mount Scenery was glorious. That part about the cloud forest - yeah, it was LEGIT. Saba by the minute became a fast favorite of ours of all the lovely places we visited.
So Fresh And So QUEEN
I had heard about how clean the Dutch and French Caribbean islands are, and it is SO true. On Saba, the people have so much pride in their home and their island -- you can’t find a piece of litter ANYWHERE. It’s inspiring!
1078 steps (give or take) later we walked down from Mount Scenery and made our way into Windward Side, the other town of Saba, enjoyed lunch at Saba Snacks, then Garvis picked us up and we made our way back to the boat.
The full moon peaked that day, so upon our return, I soaked in the sun, set some heartfelt intentions for my life (that would soon be turned on its head), and we took the afternoon to rest before returning and discovering my new favorite restaurant and resort in the whole world: Queen’s Garden. Mount Scenery is definitely a must experience hike and an awesome thing to do on Saba!
